Science

Within our purpose designed and specialised science room, students at Knox Gardens Primary School are empowered to explore the world through curiosity, investigation and discovery.

Each week, students participate in a dedicated Science session in our purpose designed space, where they engage in rich, hands-on learning experiences using authentic scientific equipment such as magnifying glasses and microscopes, beakers, measuring tools and many more.

Science Curriculum

Aligned with the Victorian Curriculum, our program interconnects the three strands of Science learning:

  • Science Understanding

  • Science Inquiry

  • Science as a Human Endeavour

Through these connected learning experiences, students build a deep understanding of scientific concepts while developing the skills and ways of thinking used by scientists.

Students explore the four Science Understanding strands over a 2-year cycle:

  • Biological Sciences

  • Chemical Sciences

  • Earth and Space Sciences

  • Physical Sciences

Through engaging investigations and collaborative learning, students develop confidence, creativity and problem-solving skills while building a rich and connected understanding of science.

Science Inquiry

A strong emphasis is placed on Science Inquiry skills, with students learning to:

  • pose questions and develop a hypothesis (prediction)

  • plan and conduct investigations and experiments

  • use appropriate scientific tools and technologies

  • collect, record, analyse and evaluate data

  • process and present findings using models, diagrams and visual organisers

  • draw evidence-based conclusions

  • communicate scientific thinking and findings effectively

Our program also reflects Science as a Human Endeavour, encouraging students to understand how scientific knowledge develops over time. Students are inspired to think critically about the role of science in everyday life and consider the ways scientific discoveries shape, and are shaped, by our world.
